Community Contribution 8: Balancing PLN & Public Disclosure

Hi PicPen. I found your post interesting and really liked how you reflected on the video from this week. The way you referred to Sophie Lui to explain the risks of a public audience on social media was very well done. I definitely agree that an important part of helping overcome the risks of the media is for people to support each other against discrimination or critique. I think many of us do not know what to do when we see negative comments against us online, especially being new in the public eye. I mentioned in my post that I would try first to change my mindset and accept that there is always going to be someone who needs to say something negative, so this can not be avoided. However, having support on top of this mindset would be helpful. Thank you for sharing!

Hi Yuxin. I thought your post was very interesting. I like that you mentioned how celebrities use social media to build their brand by promoting their work. Many celebrities and social media influencers use their platforms to find brands for sponsoring. The ways that celebrities use their platforms really show how social media plays a significant role in their careers. Some of these social media influencers would not be as big today without the use of platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Twitter. On the other hand, some public figures may already be well-known in the public eye and may use social media to stay relevant, connect with fans, or to build their PLN. I also like that you mentioned employee credibility as a risk for public figures on social media. Even though social media can play a significant role in growing a career, it can also lead to issues in a career through fake news, as we saw in this week’s readings. Thank you for sharing!
