Community Contribution 1: PLN and Public Communications

Hi Yuxin. I enjoyed reading your post. I liked how you explained social media networking as a platform to share ideas and opinions with anyone. Although, one of the risks to having the ability to post anything that comes to mind is having disagreements with others, which you mentioned. I also think it becomes difficult, especially for social media influencers. In the past, I have seen an influencer post a rumour on Twitter, and it spreads to other social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube reaching more people than before. This is a great example of the lack of control over public communications that Boyd (2012) mentioned in our readings. Essentially, data leakage can be easily shared with the public and reach broader databases.

Hi Kiera. Thank you for your post this week! I agree that a personalized learning network (PLN) involves sharing ideas with people we know, such as friends, colleagues, and family, but also with people worldwide, which has become possible due to the World Wide Web. This is an excellent point because having access to chat with people globally has changed how we communicate with people that previously could not be reached. We saw this during the COVID-19 pandemic when classes were not in-person. However, with the internet, we could keep in touch with our personalized learning networks by speaking to professors and classmates over Zoom or other messaging apps. I also agree that a key motivation for participating online is that almost everyone has a social media account. We all feel more connected to the people around us when can network online by liking, messaging, or commenting on other’s photos. It also makes it more convenient for people to stay in touch after meetings or classes.
